Entitled neighbors insist on arguing in backyard, accuse young family next door of eavesdropping while they're outside: 'We were minding our own business'

How much control are we allowed to have over how our neighbors spend their time?

Living close to other people is always going to have its annoyances, even for those who are blessed with nice neighbors. Everybody has their quirks and routines that, unless they live in the middle of nowhere, are probably going to be observed by those who live around them from time to time. It is a normal part of life.

That being said, it is important to go about your daily business while having respect for your neighbors. If things are getting to a point where people are regularly being disturbed or annoyed, then something is going to have to change.

Most people have overheard something they didn't intend to from their neighbors at one point or another. It can quickly get awkward, but in a lot of these cases, the main responsibility falls on the people who are being loud. Life isn't always downtempo, but sometimes we have to take things down a few decibels if we don't want to deal with the judgment from the people next door.

  • In this story, a young family was spending a lot of their time outside in their backyard. They didn't feel like they engaged in any activities that were likely to annoy their neighbors too much, although the fences between themselves and the backyard next door were next to one another.

    They ran into difficulty one day when their neighbors went into their backyard to argue, while they were already outside in theirs. They were ignoring the ruckus, but one of the neighbors made a disparaging comment about them eavesdropping. They were left wondering if they had overstepped in some way, although they had not been trying to.

    My spouse and I spend a lot of time outside because we have a young kid. We sit on our screened porch a lot, grill, garden, let our kid splash around in a kiddie pool, etc. We're honestly pretty low key. No parties, no huge groups of people over, no blasting music until midnight. We're usually inside by 7 and in bed before 10.

  • Our houses are maybe 40 feet apart and the fences to our yards are basically back to back, so hearing people outside is just part of living here. If people are on their porch or in their yard, you can hear conversations sometimes. Especially in the summer when everyone has windows open.

If somebody is yelling, locking each other out of the house, slamming doors, and peeling out of the driveway next door, people are going to hear it. We just ignore it and continue about our business.
